What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. While this was two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation - which had declared all slaves in rebel states free as of January 1, 1863 - it was still an incredibly momentous occasion. For many Black Americans, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the long journey from slavery to freedom and to celebrate the progress that has been made since then. It's also a time to support Black-owned businesses and to uproot the systemic racism that still exists today. So come out and celebrate Juneteenth at Momentum Coffee!

When is Juneteenth Observed?

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is observed annually on June 19th. This date marks the anniversary of the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that all slaves were free - two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated across the United States as a day to commemorate the end of slavery. Many communities hold festivals and parades.

Juneteenth National Independence Day falls on Sunday, June 19, 2022, and is a federal holiday according to the Office of Personnel Management. Most federal employees will receive the following Monday as a day off of work.

The newest Federal holiday was signed into law on June 17, 2021, by President Joe Biden to commemorate the end of slavery in the U.S. following the conclusion of the Civil War.
